David Kaplan: Cubs and Carlos Marmol Close To Long Term Contract

According to David Kaplan of WGN Radio 720, the Chicago Cubs and Carlos Marmol are close to a long-term contract.
Baseball sources tell us that Cubs GM Jim Hendry is close to finalizing a long-term deal with closer Carlos Marmol.
The contract should be announced before pitchers and catchers report to spring training next weekend.

I'm a big fan of Carlos Marmol. While he can go through stretches where he scares the hell out of you with walks, he could easily be one of the most dominant closers in the league. Last year, Marmol converted 38 of 43 saves and struck out 138 hitters.

The Cubs bullpen is looking pretty good with Sean Marshall in the long reliever role, Kerry Wood in the set-up man role, and Marmol in the closer role. What was a weak spot for the Cubs last year could end up being middle of the pack in baseball with the addition of Wood.
