My NBA Power Rankings 2/14/11

Happy Valentine's Day everyone. I'm going to try to rank all 30 NBA teams. This is sure to fail just as bad as this CBS Los Angeles reporter last night after the horrendous Grammy Awards:

Jesus, I'm wondering how that showed up on closed captioning. Where was I? Oh yeah those power rankings that everyone loves yet they're stupid in reality. I'm not using a stupid, idiotic, dumbass method like John Hollinger. Just my opinion. Because I don't want to waste my time, I'll give you info on the first five teams and then just list the next 25. Here we go:

1. San Antonio Spurs (45-9)---Seriously the class of the NBA at this point. They just keep winning and playing great basketball. They did have one slip-up this week losing to the red-hot Philadelphia 76ers but they haven't had many slip-ups so far this season and when they do, they follow it up with a win streak. The Spurs continue their rodeo trip this week with 2 more road games before the break. A very compelling match-up on Thursday on TNT in Chicago against the Bulls who played them tough in San Antonio. Still don't think this team is going to win it all this year but what a regular season they are having.

2. Boston Celtics (39-14)---As much as I hate this team outside of Ray Allen, this is a great group. As much as Doc Rivers has gotten bashed before the Big Three came along, he's actually not that bad of a coach. Sure he has the talent here in Boston but the way he's gotten them to play team defense and win games is just unbelievable. This team is 3-0 against the Miami Heat this year so this is something to keep in mind in May when these two teams are likely going at it in the Eastern Conference Finals. The Heat just don't have the size to match up with them. I fully expect to see the Celtics in the Finals yet again.

3. Miami Heat (39-15)---LeBron James, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade can go fuck themselves. But this doesn't mean I'm not going to put them in the top 3 so far this season. Only reason I can't put them any higher is because as I mentioned, they're 0-3 against the Celtics this year including a loss in Boston earlier today. I just can't see this Heat team making it to the Finals this season. Here's one reason why. The Heat are 10-11 against teams over .500 this season. Out of the top 7 teams in the NBA, they are the only team out of the bunch that has a losing record against teams over .500. The Heat are an incredible 27-2 against teams under .500. It's not a bad thing that they are beating teams that they are supposed to beat but that doesn't win you games in April, May, and June.

4. Los Angeles Lakers (38-17)---Was deciding between putting the Lakers or the Bulls in this spot. Decided on putting the Lakers here because while these are power rankings and this is supposed to be on the season to date, I'm putting them here over the Bulls because I give the Lakers way more of a chance of doing something in the playoffs than the Bulls for obvious reasons. It's probably quite shocking that the Lakers even have 38 wins at this point because all season long it's been "what's wrong with the Lakers?". The Lakers are currently on their long road trip with the Grammys and drunk reporters having a stroke on live TV in town, and they've been quite successful on this trip beating the Celtics and Knicks in their respective homes. They had a minor slip-up today in Orlando but they'll be fine and will more than likely be back in the Western Conference Finals at least again this year.

5. Chicago Bulls (36-16)---I've been critical of the Bulls this year just because expectations are higher but they've really done a nice job this year. I see Derrick Rose as the runaway MVP at this point for what he's done with Carlos Boozer and Joakim Noah each missing time this season. Joakim Noah is expected to return the first game after the All Star Break and this will be a huge boost to already the 2nd best defensive team in the NBA behind the Boston Celtics. And as much as I've been critical about Tom Thibodeau so far this season, he's really done a nice job. Sure I disagree with some of his in-game moves like not putting Rose back in during a rally against the Knicks at home in one of the first games of the season and putting John Lucas the Turd on the floor to make clutch free throws after he just arrived with the team earlier that day. But Thibs has done a really nice job emphasizing defense and that's what's going to win you games in the playoffs. I still think if the Bulls want to be serious contenders in the playoffs, they're going to have to upgrade at shooting guard but as it stands now, the Bulls are probably a 2nd round exit waiting to happen. But I guess this is progress over the Vinny Del Negro disaster. God is he a terrible coach.

6. Dallas Mavericks (38-16)
7. Oklahoma City Thunder (34-19)
8. Orlando Magic (35-21)
9. New Orleans Hornets (33-23)
10. Atlanta Hawks (33-20)
11. Memphis Grizzlies (30-26)
12. Denver Nuggets (31-24)
13. Utah Jazz (31-24)
14. Portland Trail Blazers (30-24)
15. New York Knicks (27-26)
16. Phoenix Suns (26-26)
17. Philadelphia 76ers (26-28)
18. Indiana Pacers (24-28)
19. Golden State Warriors (24-29)
20. Houston Rockets (25-30)
21. Charlotte Bobcats (23-31)
22. Los Angeles Clippers (20-34)
23. Milwaukee Bucks (20-33)
24. Detroit Pistons (20-35)
25. New Jersey Nets (17-38)
26. Washington Wizards (15-38)
27. Sacramento Kings (13-38)
28. Toronto Raptors (15-40)
29. Minnesota Timberwolves (13-41)
30. Cleveland Cavaliers (9-46)

Check back tomorrow where I show you where the national media (and John Hollinger's dumbass computer rankings) has the Bulls ranked.
